The city of Oakwood, OH, is part of the Dayton metropolitan area, covering 2.2 square miles of land in Montgomery County. Surrounded by Dayton to the north and Kettering to the south, Oakwood is unofficially divided into two parts, east and west, by State Route 48. Close to 9,000 people call Oakwood home.
Oakwood consisted primarily of farmland until the early 20th century, and the new city was incorporated in 1908. One of Oakwood’s early residents was Orville Wright, whose home, Hawthorn Hill, stands to this day as a National Historic Landmark. Oakwood today is a suburban residential area with many tree-lined streets and a rich collection of architecture. The city maintains a high level of aesthetic awareness, giving out “Beautification Awards” to winning houses while adhering to strict zoning laws. Public architecture is a general source of pride throughout Oakwood.
